I’ll fill you in of 7 years of studying The Mass News Media at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism. It comes down to the dissemination of the news and sensationalism. The newsmedia started when the television gained popularity in the early 50’s. When nearly 90% of all Americans had a television screen in their living room. Knocking out the radio, where you could visually see who was talking to you. With new developing ways to gain and obtain viewership sensationalism was at the forefront. Sensationnalism began back to the Penny Press days, when publishers needed eyeful messages to get readers attention. Today, this sensationalism has become so perverted we are seeing executions on air. Why? The News Media today is competing with Social Media; where everything is instant and in real-time. This new wave of News Media is debilitating and completely destructive.
I turned to the 7:00 o’clock news on and saw a man live-streaming and then the camera goes out, because he had been shot and gotten into a car accident. They played this on NBC. This isn’t their first offense, many news media outlets are doing this. They inform the viewer that the graphics may be too violent to watch, and then continue playing it anyways. I think this is a horrendous way to share about someones death. It reminded me of the gruesome medieval times when people would gather in crowds to attend a beheading…it was a form of entertainment.
