I was going through my husbands drawer and found all these coins. Quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies. I started counting them (because that’s what I do, I get bored fast) I started counting them and noticed the word “Monticello” with a big plantation on the back of the nickel. There was $50 in that drawer! But anyways back to the point…Monticello. I had no idea what that meant. My family had a lake house in Monticello, Indiana so I thought maybe Jefferson was talking about that? Nope! It was the house he designed after his father gave him the land at the age of 26. First off, how cool?! To be inherited land. Second off, how come we are so bounded by the past? This guy from way back when…a time when there were African-American Slaves….this guy that was a contributing author to the constitution, The 3rd president of the United fucking States of America, we still have money with these old relics. How come we haven’t advanced? How come? I don’t want to bore you with the history of the “nickel” but all this made me think about how our society is still functioning form a way of the past. Thomas Jefferson isn’t relevant. Neither are copper coins. I have a strange relationship with the United fucking State of America. I love this country and I would die for my country, but the paradox we have in this country is that we are choosing to subject ourselves to garbage. We aren’t advancing as a nation. Eyes all over the world look up to us! No wonder there is division and confusion amongst the masses.
